INSPIRING SCHOOL KIDS TO SOLVE SOCIAL IMPACT CHALLENGES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LOVE LIFE AND KINGSMEAD COLLEGE

Africa Teen Geeks is hosting a “hackathon” for school children aimed at doing good – by developing an app to benefit the public health system.

On June 3 and 4, up to 150 girls and boys from all backgrounds will gather around computers at Kingsmead College in Rosebank, Johannesburg, for an intensive, 48-hour Hack4Health hackathon.



The aim of these young “geeks”: to put their heads together and develop an app that government hospitals can use to improve or automate their admission and discharge systems, so reducing the amount of laborious red tape that patients and staff routinely endure as well as developing an app that will make it easy for community members to vulnteer their skills and time at their local hospitals.

Africa Teen Geeks mission is to inspire African kids to solve problems affecting their communities through technology and innovation. By supporting young children we can inspire a generation of African kids who will become social entrpreneurs, technology entrepreurs and innovators who can change their lives and uplift their communities through innovation and solve important social issues.

Hackathon participants will choose between two program tracks: Digitizing the hospital Designing an applications making it easy for communities to volunteer at their local hospitals

The hospitals benefiting will lead a specific prototyping track providing subject-matter mentorship, and firsthand experiences to addressing community challenges. Africa Teen Geeks and Love Life will be running workshops to Hackathon participants to prepare them for the two day event at UNISA labs and Kingsmead College.

Interested participants should choose one programme to design for. You will need to incorporate specific challenge questions (listed below) when submitting your application and prototype ideas. Apply today to participate! The application deadline is May 19th, 2017.

On Saturday June 3, the hackathon will officially kick off with school kids from across Gauteng and beyond. Teams will assemble themselves and introduce their concept to the audience on Friday evening with the goal of working on their concepts ideas all day on Saturday and Sunday.

On June 3rd, the hackathon will begin with breakfast, a pep talk and a technical partner workshop. During lunch, teams can meet with Mentors from partners and the Department of health. The teams will hack through the afternoon. All hacking will end on Sunday 16:30 which will lead to the project demos, the judging and then ultimately, the prize ceremony and closing reception.

 We encourage individuals to form teams (2 or more people) prior to applying for the hackathon. Each team should designate a Team Lead to submit one application on behalf of the team. If you are applying without a team, please indicate this in the form below. You will be added to an existing team.
